Layton PM Gives Others a Lifeline as a Volunteer Pilot

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (December 17, 2019) – Summer Pittmann has been going the extra mile to help people in need the past few years – logging thousands and thousands of miles in the air to transport patients for medical care. The Layton Project Manager is a LifeLine pilot, part of an amazing group of volunteers who facilitate free transportation for people with medical needs.

Summer has flown approximately 10 missions with LifeLine. Her father, Scott Butler, is also a pilot who has been flying for 17 years. With his encouragement, and being raised to serve with the resources and talents she was given in life, Summer and her dad became part of the LifeLine family.

LifeLine flights are flown in private aircraft by volunteer pilots. The pilots donate 100% of the flight expense – including their time, talent, airplane, fuel and operating expenses.

On one recent flight, Summer was transporting a patient with stage 4 metastatic cancer. Her medical attention requires traveling from Illinois to Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Atlanta for monthly treatments. “Despite the medical diagnosis, her attitude was refreshing,” Summer said. “Her joy reminded us to keep the holiday season into perspective and to be thankful for the daily things we take for granted.”

For the moment, Summer is grounded – doctor’s orders until her baby is born – but no doubt more flights are in her future.

More than 450 volunteer pilots have flown over 5 million nautical miles and scheduled more than 8,000 missions.

Fun “Layton family” fact: When Summer joined Layton in 2012, she had quit flying because of an electrical fire in training. Layton construction manager Andy Jodway helped her brainstorm ways to begin enjoying it again and encouraged her to get back in the air.
